Mariana Montenegro and Milton Mahan both grew up in San Felipe, Chile. Montenegro began writing songs around age 11 and was part of a group called Montychicas. In high school, she attended rehearsals with Punk Dolls, a band led by Mahan that featured Sonic Youth-inspired distorted guitar. They started making music together under the name Dënver, with Montenegro on keyboards and Mahan on guitar. The band name has often been linked to Jack Kerouac's On the Road, but that connection is more a convenient story than the real starting point. During this period, they developed a romantic relationship that lasted about a year and a half; after it ended, they continued making music together.

In 2006, they released their debut EP Solenöide, recorded on a four-track cassette recorder with handmade physical copies. After high school, Montenegro moved to Santiago to study music; Mahan dropped out of university in Valparaíso and followed her. They supported themselves with odd jobs and performed as street musicians on public buses. Their first album Totoral was released in late April 2008 via indie label Neurotyka. Their second album Música, Gramática, Gimnasia (2010) was produced by Cristián Heyne and featured richer instrumentation with live drums, brass, and strings. The duo performed internationally from 2011 onward, including at the inaugural Lollapalooza Chile.

In June 2013, they released Fuera de Campo, self-produced by Mahan due to budget constraints. The album faced difficulties including a damaged master and label bankruptcy. Shortly after, the duo announced an indefinite hiatus but reconciled during a Mexican tour and continued working together. In 2014, they performed at Primavera Sound in Barcelona and released a cover of Juan Gabriel's 'Pero Qué Necesidad.' Their fourth album Sangre Cita (2015) showcased a more dance-oriented sound.
